VETRERA / COMPATIBILITY
Compatibility guide
Know what is supported before you begin.
Playback depends on your Mac, your media source, and the file’s formats.
| Item | Support and limitations |
|---|---|
| macOS | macOS 12 or later. |
| Media servers | Jellyfin, Emby, and Plex. Available features depend on the server and library. |
| Network and local media | WebDAV, SMB2 / SMB3, local files and folders, and compatible video URLs. |
| Video formats | Plays MP4, MOV, M4V, HLS, and TS directly, and common MKV files (H.264/HEVC with AAC, AC-3, E-AC-3, or PCM audio) without re-encoding the picture. |
| Playback | Vetrera plays video with macOS’s built-in decoders and has no software decoder of its own. Formats it can’t play this way, such as DTS or TrueHD audio and AV1 or VP9 video in MKV, are converted by a media server with transcoding. Local files and network shares can’t be transcoded, so Vetrera shows a clear message instead. |
| Quality and audio tracks | Audio tracks depend on the video. Server quality conversion requires server transcoding support. DTS and TrueHD need server conversion or another audio track. |
| Subtitles | SRT, WebVTT, ASS/SSA with styles and embedded fonts, and PGS/SUP subtitles, whether embedded, in the same folder, or found online by your Jellyfin server. DVD and DVB image subtitles need server burn-in. |
| Automatic skipping | Requires recognizable intro and credit segment markers from the source. It does not detect these segments in every video. |
| Buffering | Used for playback buffering and prefetching, not offline downloads. |
| Seeking and resume | Seeking and resuming depend on the source. WebDAV servers without range requests play from the start. |
Local network and remote connections
Your Mac must be able to reach the media source. Remote addresses, authentication, and reachability depend on your service configuration. Vetrera does not host media servers or provide network tunneling.
